Liver Cancer and Liver Transplant Surgery

Mehmet Çakır (53), who lives in Antalya, after experiencing the pain of losing two of his family members to liver cancer and cirrhosis, was saved from the same disease thanks to liver transplantation. Çakır, who lost his father 15 years ago and his brother 3 years ago to these diseases, experienced great sadness when he learned that he had the same disease during routine checks. However, he regained his health with early diagnosis and a successful liver transplant operation.

Mehmet Çakır learned about his disease, which had no symptoms, only at the hospital where he went for a check-up. Doctors told him that he, like his father and brother, had liver cancer and cirrhosis and needed an urgent liver transplant. Çakır, who was included in the organ waiting list of Antalya Training and Research Hospital, received the news that a suitable organ was found only 15 days later and was immediately taken into surgery. Thanks to the successful operation performed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğrul Çakır and his team, Mehmet Çakır stepped into a healthy life.

Çakır expressed his feelings after the operation with the following words: “I had no complaints until my illness. I was feeling only a slight weakness and I attributed this to my diabetes. It turned out that my liver had failed and I was unaware of it. Thanks to early diagnosis, I regained my health, I am grateful to the donor family and my doctors.”

His wife Medine Çakır stated that she was very happy that her husband regained his health and thanked everyone who contributed to the transplantation process.

Mehmet Çakır’s story once again demonstrates the vital importance of early diagnosis and liver transplantation in insidious diseases such as liver cancer and cirrhosis.
