What is Rectal Surgery?

Rectal surgery involves the treatment of diseases and tumours occurring in the rectum area by surgical intervention. The rectum is the region that forms the last part of the digestive system and where faeces are stored. Therefore, rectal surgery is a highly sensitive and specialised field.

In Which Cases Rectal Surgery is Required?

Treatments Offered in Rectal Surgery

Rectum Resection
It is the most common surgical procedure in the treatment of rectal cancer. It is aimed to completely remove the cancerous area and protect the surrounding healthy tissues.
Anterior Resection
It is preferred for the treatment of early-stage cancers in the upper part of the rectum. The cancerous area is removed, then the ends of the bowel are joined together so that normal bowel function is preserved.
Abdominoperineal Resection (APR)
It is used to treat advanced cancers in the lower part of the rectum. In this procedure, the rectum and anus are completely removed and a permanent colostomy is created.
Intersphincteric Resection
It is used to treat small tumours in the lower part of the anal canal. By removing the cancerous tissue, the anal sphincter muscles are preserved so that the patient's bowel control is maintained as much as possible.
Transanal Excision
It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure preferred for the treatment of early-stage rectal cancers or small, low-grade tumours. The tumour is removed through the anus and large surgical incisions are not required.
Pelvic Exenteration
It is performed in advanced cases of rectal cancer, when the cancer has spread to other pelvic organs. In this procedure, neighbouring organs (e.g. bladder, uterus) can be removed along with the rectum. The extent of surgery is determined by the extent of cancer spread.
Stoma Formation
In cases where the rectum has been completely removed, a permanent or temporary colostomy or ileostomy may be opened to allow the intestines to open outside the body. This procedure can be performed after surgery in the treatment of rectal cancer.
Ileal Pouch-Anal Anastomosis (IPAA)
After total proctocolectomy, in cases where the rectum is removed, a ‘pouch’ formed from the small intestine is connected to the anus. This is done to preserve normal defecation function after surgery for rectal cancer.
Fistula Repair

    Curious Questions

Rectal surgery is a surgical intervention for the treatment of various diseases of the rectum. These include rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), diverticulitis and rectal prolapse.

Rectal surgery is usually required in cases such as rectal cancer, benign rectal tumours, severe inflammatory bowel diseases, rectal injuries and rectal prolapse. Surgery may be recommended as part of the treatment plan depending on the type and stage of the disease.

The recovery process after rectal surgery varies depending on the type of surgery, the patient’s general state of health and how invasive the surgery was. Usually, hospitalisation may be required for a few days and full recovery may take several weeks. Dietary changes, exercise and regular medical check-ups are important during the recovery process.

As with any surgical intervention, there may be some complications in rectal surgery. These complications include infection, bleeding, anastomotic leakage, changes in bowel movements and, rarely, bowel obstruction. Your surgeon will take the necessary precautions to minimise these risks.

Quality of life after rectal cancer surgery can vary depending on the patient’s age, general health and the extent of the surgery. There may be changes in bowel habits after surgery, but this usually improves over time. Physical activity and dietary adjustments can help improve quality of life.

Nutrition after rectal surgery is important to support the healing process of the intestines. Soft and easily digestible foods should be preferred at first. Fibre foods, spicy foods and caffeinated drinks should be avoided. Your doctor will prepare a special nutrition plan for you.

Yes, regular medical check-ups are very important after rectal surgery. These controls are carried out to monitor your healing process, to detect possible complications early and to protect your health. You should go to check-ups at the time intervals recommended by your doctor.
