Intestinal Tumor Surgery
Irfan Berk, 57, living in Antalya, underwent a successful operation with robotic surgery after being diagnosed with an intestinal tumor. The diseased 60-centimeter segment of intestine was removed from the rectal area thanks to this advanced technology.
Intestinal Tumor Treatment with Robotic Surgery
Providing information about intestinal tumor treatment, Antalya Training and Research Hospital General Surgery and Organ Transplant Center Responsible Physician Prof. Dr. Tuğrul Çakır stated that intestinal tumors can be treated with open, closed (laparoscopic) and robotic surgery methods. Stating that in open surgery, the tumor segment is removed by making an incision through the abdominal wall, Dr. Çakır emphasized that this method may increase the risk of infection and prolong the healing process.
Stating that laparoscopic surgery method has been developed to minimize these negativities, Dr. Çakır said, “In laparoscopic surgery, small incisions are made on the anterior abdominal wall. However, additional incisions may need to be made to remove tumorous tissue, which may cause complications in some cases,” said Dr. Çakır.
Comfortable and Safe Surgery with Robotic Surgery
Stating that the robotic surgery method can be applied in limited centers in public hospitals, Dr. Çakır said that Antalya Training and Research Hospital is one of these centers. Stating that robotic surgery offers a more comfortable option for patients compared to other methods, Dr. Çakır explained that this method eliminates negative effects such as the surgeon’s hand tremor and that the tumorous tissue can be removed through natural body orifices (mouth, rectum or uterine canal in women).
Stating that İrfan Berk was the 15th patient treated with robotic surgery, Dr. Çakır said, “We successfully completed the operation, which lasted about 4 hours, by removing the diseased 60-centimeter intestinal area from the anus.”

İrfan Berk, who had a heart attack before the surgery, stated that the treatment process was delayed but he regained his health after the surgery. “I was very sad when I was diagnosed with cancer, but my doctor gave me my life back. I feel better now than before,” he said, sharing his feelings.
