Rectal Cancer Surgery

Faruk Bostan (56), who was diagnosed with Rectal Cancer in Antalya, regained his health with a Rectal Cancer Surgery in which he was kept awake with spinal anesthesia instead of general anesthesia. The 60-centimeter cancerous part of his large intestine was removed in an operation performed by talking to Bostan. Stating that this special method was preferred because Bostan is a heart patient and carries a pacemaker, General Surgeon Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğrul Çakır said, “Thanks to spinal anesthesia, we had to perform this surgery without tiring the heart. It was a challenging surgery, but it was successful.”

Spinal Anesthesia Preferred for Rectal Cancer Surgery Due to Cardiac Risk

Bostan’s cardiac condition required the operation to be performed under spinal anesthesia instead of general anesthesia. Stating that in such large abdominal surgeries, the surgeon should continue the operation by answering the patient’s questions, Dr. Çakır said, “In such operations where our patient is awake, it is essential for the whole team to carry out a multidisciplinary work. The duration of the operation is also very important, so every minute was of great importance.”

Rectal Cancer Surgery with Spinal Anesthesia is Rare

Emphasizing that surgeons generally do not prefer to work on an awake patient, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çakır said, “The 60-centimeter cancerous part of the large intestine was removed during Rectal Cancer Surgery. This method is generally used in simple operations, while general anesthesia is more common in major abdominal surgeries. However, our patient recovered quickly after surgery and returned to his normal life,” he said.

The Moment of Surgery is Remembered by the Patient

Faruk Bostan, who was awake during the operation, said, “We chatted with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğrul Çakır throughout the operation, he explained every step to me. I remember the entire operation and I feel very good,” he said. Bostan said that he and his wife would return to Denizli from Antalya with their own car, and that his doctor allowed them to do so.

Faruk Bostan’s wife, retired nurse Nazlı Bostan, said, “I was worried that the surgery would take a long time and that my husband would suffer. However, the operation took only 1.5 hours. We are grateful to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çakır and his team, it was a very successful operation.”
